HSS drill

HSS drill bits are twist drills that are specially designed for machining metal. The abbreviation HSS stands for High Speed Steel. TOSAG offers a wide selection of HSS drill bits for all requirements, from drill bits for everyday metalworking to special versions for precise work or complicated metal drilling. In addition to individual drill bits, there is also a set of HSS twist drills. This set of HSS twist drills contains drill bits in different sizes. TOSAG offers a wide selection of different diameters and thread types for all HSS drill bits. read more

HSS drill bits for industry and trade

The properties and advantages of HSS drill bits

HSS drill bits are made of high-alloy tool steel. Thanks to this material, the drill bits are designed for temperatures of up to 600 degrees Celsius. Even under these high loads, HSS remains stable and hard. This allows cutting speeds that are three to four times higher than with conventional metal drill bits.

The HSS drill bits can also be reground and have a high breaking strength. This enables a long service life. At the same time, HSS drill bits are a comparatively inexpensive option.

Possible uses of HSS drill bits

HSS drill bits are designed both for conventional hand drills and for use in drill stand machines as well as lathes and milling machines. HSS drill bits are primarily used when drilling metal. The different variants cover the entire spectrum, such as steel, cast steel, gray cast iron, malleable cast iron, sintered iron, bronze, brass or aluminum. However, other hard or brittle materials, such as stone and plastic, can also be processed with these drill bits.

The exact area of application of an HSS drill can be identified by the type class. HSS-R drill bits are the standard version. These drill bits are intended for general tasks when drilling in metal.

Type N drills are intended for regular metallic materials in a range of 500 - 1300 N/mm². This includes zinc, light metals, copper as well as steel and cast iron.

HSS-G drill bits can be recognized by the metallic sheen of the spiral. They are made entirely of HSS and are suitable for precise work with pillar drills, lathes and milling machines as well as hand drills. Type G HSS drill bits are self-centring and therefore the right choice for precise work. The tip is hardened and the drill bits have chip removal.

Type H HSS drill bits are designed for machining hard and brittle metals from 1300 N/mm². This includes brass and bronze. Hard plastics and stone such as marble or slate can also be machined with these HSS type H drill bits.

The HSS-CO5 drill bits have a cobalt alloy. This makes it possible to machine extra hard and tough metal materials. HSS-CO5 drill bits are used when drilling in stainless steel or high-strength steel. These drill bits are also particularly heat-resistant.

The HSS type W drill bits have a short spiral. This variant is designed for soft and tough metal materials such as aluminum and alloys based on it. Type W HSS drill bits are also suitable for copper, phosphor bronze, soft plastics and hardwood.

The different shapes of twist drills

Twist drills are used in stationary drilling and manual machines as well as in CNC machines such as milling machines. These devices have different drill shank systems, which makes it necessary to select the right HSS drill bits for your machine.

TOSAG has both twist drills with a cylindrical shank and with a Morse taper in its range. The twist drills with cylindrical shank are intended for stationary drills and similar devices. These HSS drill bits are typically available with a diameter of between 0.5 and 13 mm. Twist drills with Morse taper, on the other hand, are designed for industrial use. These holders can be found in CNC machines and similar equipment. Twist drills with Morse taper are available in seven different sizes. These are designated MK0 to MK6. They cover shank diameters from 9 to 63 mm. The Morse taper allows better transmission of the machine's torque to the drill.

Special variants: NC spot drills and multi-bevel step drills

Pilot drills are designed for CNC and NC machines in industrial production. Pilot drills are particularly precise and create pilot holes when maximum accuracy is required. The actual drilling is then carried out by another HSS drill or a tap. These are available with a point angle of 90 and 120 degrees. The counterpart of the NC tapping drill for manual tasks is the centering drill. These drill bits have a longer tip, which makes it easier to position them precisely by hand.

Multi-faceted step drills are mainly used in the tool industry. These drills have two different diameters in one tool. This is referred to as a step diameter. These drills create holes for countersunk screws, 180 degree screw head countersinks and threaded core holes in a single operation, for example. TOSAG has a large number of combinations of step diameters in its range.
